For 24 years, Barcelona in June has been a synonym of sun, beach and Sónar, a must-attend for lovers of music, technology and culture trends. Two years ago we already took part in Sónar+D, the startup competition arranged by the festival. We were then acknowledged as one of the best projects. In this last edition we came back anxious to check what was new in the sector and create bonds with music companies, artists, labels, etc.
We started up on Wednesday 14th with the networking day, a new initiative of this edition. It consisted of a day exclusively dedicated to business, without crowds. We attended different talks, such as the offered by the masters of the music sector Richie Hawtin and Björk —she starred in the most multitudinous talk of the whole Sónar+; or the one given by Brandon Hixon, manager of De La Soul, who explained how he managed to involve fans in the creation of the band’s latest album by developing an excellent marketing campaign.
Gigs began in the afternoon of June 15th. There was an endless list of essential names and some others which, although not so outstanding, were equally surprising. Because Sónar is a place for making discoveries and enjoying the unknown. Without a doubt, the stars of Sónar by Day were great sound experimenters, such as Arca and Jesse Kanda with their visuals; Evian Christ with his progressive sound evolution —not recommended for cardiacs; Nosaj Thing and Daito Manabe, who filled up the Sónar Hall with their incredible video proposal; or SOHN, who presented an emotional and melodic direct and received a well-deserved ovation. Another protagonist was the new XS stage, made to show the most emerging artists from urban culture, like the dancehall singer Bad Gyal, Spanish trap artists like Bejo and Yung Beef or the Icelandic Sturla Atlas.
Once at night, it was the moment for the headliners. And they madethe grade: Moderat, Nicolas Jaar, Soulwax, De La Soul, Justice, Nina Kraviz, Vitalic, Masters at Work and Seth Troxler b2b Tiga (each one with a 6 hours set), Black Madona, Dubfire… We could name them all one by one, because all of them made public have an unforgettable time in Sónar by Night’s most massive edition.
Last but not least, we want to say thank you to all the people we met and chatted with. Thanks for all the time they spent with us: for us it was a great pleasure to meet you and we hope we will keep in contact for many years. And, of course, thanks to the whole Sónar team. Once more they created an unmatched space for entertainment, music and technology.
